September 14, 2007 - Rapper Remy Ma was charged with attempted murder on July 14 after the shooting of Makeda Barnes Joseph, who was shot twice in the abdomen, in front of a Manhattan nightclub. The shooting followed a dispute over $2,000 that was missing from Remy Ma’s purse. Remy Ma, born Remy Smith, was victorious in court yesterday as her attempted murder charge was reduced to an assault charge. The charges were reduced because prosecutors believe that the gun may have gone off accidentally. However, she faces new charges alleging she hired a group of men to intimidate and assault two other men, one whose girlfriend may testify against the rapper for allegedly shooting her best friend in July.
Assistant District Attorney Jason Berland revealed to the court that Remy Ma ordered an attack on a witnesses boyfriend at the Players Club in the Bronx on August 19 because his girlfriend was eluding her. Prosecutors say that the hired men approached the man and his associate and began beating them. One man suffered a broken bone in his face and the other received a black eye. The men could not identify the men because of the barrage of punches that were being thrown in their direction. One man was hospitalized for a week after the incident.
According to Remy’s Defendants, the brawl had nothing to do with Remy Ma. “The brawl happened at a Kay Slay party where Remy Ma was in attendance with her security and was also a specially invited guest. No one was ever arrested in the alleged brawl and none of the people actually fighting were apprehended or arrested by the police”, stated the defendants.
Remy was charged with witness-tampering, intimidating a victim, gang-assault charges and third-degree assault. Remy has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
