Some 600 pages of intelligence documents have been released by the New York Police Department in an ongoing litigation surrounding “excessive and unnecessary” arrests during the 2004 Republican Convention. The intelligence documents reveal that Russell Simmons, Diddy, Jay-Z, and Alicia Keys, were all monitored by police in the months leading up to the convention. All four attended a Hip-Hop Summit Action Network rally in August of 2004 addressing various social and political issues. While the NYPD still stands by their actions, The New York Civil Liberties Union is arguing that the NYPD crossed the line between keeping the peace and violating free speech.by Lucas DiGia & Robby Uppal
