Master P

The CEO of No Limit Records, Master P, has started a new label that addresses the recent controversy and backlash surrounding the content of rap music. Master P says Taking A Stand Records will “take Hip hop to another level, and [teach] our kids how to mature, make changes, and never sell out.” A quick browse of their website shows that the label is committed to community outreach, free speech, and of course getting the youth involved. They’ve partnered with like-minded groups to hold the We Got Next Summit at Howard University at the end of June.

The event’s goal is to expand the Washington D.C. area hip hop community and increase knowledge of the music industry for all that attend. The event claims to have a main objective of encouraging artists to take responsibility for their lyrics and the effect they have on the community. As well intentioned and interesting as this label and event are, I have reservations as to its effectiveness. This is about industry standards and practices as well, but isn’t it important to give the people what they want? They must address the fact that the current hip hop supply is in reflection of the demand. It may still be true that most hip hop listeners only want blunts, 40’s, and bitches. I am all for the next thing in hip hop, the expansion of content choices for consumers, and especially the socially conscious part of the message– but let’s not forget why people stopped buying Will Smith albums.
