The World Famous Lessons in Jazz Series is proud to present their second annual symposium on the deep-rooted relationship between hip hop and Jazz. This year’s panel includes legendary hip hop artist and producer Q-tip, Easy Mo Bee (produced Miles Davis’s Doo Bop), Jazz musicians Lenny White and Jeff Lorber, as well as Vince Wilburn (the administrator of the Miles Davis estate). Since the strongest connection between these two genres is facilitated by the sampling and reuse of jazz tracks, Todd Pilot will be present as an expert on legal and copyright matters. This gathering of hip hop and Jazz is meant to explore this deep relationship, as well as the legal and artistic implications of sampling jazz in hip hop music.
A new addition to this year’s symposium, taking place on June 23rd, is the Lifetime Achievement Award. This will be given to Weldon Irvine Jr (a native of the Hampton, VA location), whom has been influential to both hip hop and Jazz artists alike. This award will be given in his name in the future. To give you a better idea of his importance to hip hop, he is known as being an influence on Q-tip as well as Mos Def, Talib Qweli, Common, and KRS-One among others. All hip hop and or Jazz lovers (its hard not to be both), and all artists and fans are invited to celebrate this long lasting love affair between Jazz and Hip hop. Admission is only ten dollars.
