August 31, 2007 - HoodGrown records is learning from what other independent labels have learned in the internet age. HoodGrown’s debut release “Cartel - Prepare For Glory”, had an all digital distribution. Now, HoodGrown is further harnessing the accessability and interactive nature of the web to get listeners involved in the form of remix contest.
Contestants are to rap over a beat previously graced by female Boston rapper Brix. The online download of the track has an instrumental bundled with it for contest participants to rap over. Each artist submitting to the contest must record a 16 bar accapella for a remix of the track, named “Real Talk.”
On hoodgrownrecords.com, some of the best user submissions are already featured alongside the original track. Artists have until September 10th to make their entries, and the winner will be featured in a remix of this song. The remix will be added to the download and the artist will be credited in the album artwork.
We’ll be seeing more independent rappers participating online as more and more labels, independent artist communities, and established artists provide the opportunity through open contests.
