With the tragic news of the Carter 3 getting bumped back to next year, Weezy has gone mixtape crazy. “I Feel Like Dying”, a track off The Drought Is Over Pt. 2 (Carter 3 Sessions Mixtape), is a Jim Jonsin produced slow burn with a sick sample from the South African band Henry Ate.
This ode to mind altering substances starts off with the sample-based hook, “Only once the drugs are done/ Then I feel like dying, I feel like dying.” Wayne then goes on to lay a smooth flow about playing hoops with the moon and swimming in a sea of Codine amongst other Fear and Loathing lyrics. This track is a welcome departure from the typical “I’m the best rapper alive” mantra that has followed Weezy around the last couple years.
So while we wait for the album, at least an abundance of mixtape gems to keep our Carter appetite at bay. In the mean time, throw this this in your iPod and check back for more soon.
